Love and Faith Basic School, Spanish Town - October 2022

Mission Stop #2 – Love and Faith Basic School

Our second stop on the mission was Love and Faith Basic School, located in Spanish Town off March Pen Road. The school was in urgent need of a literacy boost, as most of the children came from low-income households where resources are limited.

The programme provided a safe and welcoming space for the students to express themselves. Despite their struggles, I was inspired by the brilliance and potential I saw—most notably in David Barnes, a remarkable young boy. I look forward to hearing great things from David in the future.

This visit was supported by three dedicated volunteers: Shanique Singh, Khdrea Jones- Miss St. Catherine Festival Queen 2022, and Debbie-Ann Forbes. Their energy and commitment helped make the sessions meaningful, and the students truly enjoyed the experience.

Principal Rachel McDonald deeply appreciated the visit. She leads the school with both motherly care and remarkable resilience, often going beyond her role as an educator to provide financial support—covering meals, creating safe spaces, and ensuring that the school remains a stable environment for her students.

As part of this journey, we were also blessed with a special gift for Author Day—two books donated by American author Jerod Simon, which were presented on the final day of the mission. These books were an important addition to our effort to spark a love for reading and expose children to diverse voices in literature.

One of my missions is to highlight schools like Love and Faith Basic, where the need for support goes far beyond what the surrounding community can provide. These schools deserve greater attention and resources so they can continue shaping the lives of children who have so much potential to shine.
