Silverstone Infant School, Portmore - January 2023

Mission Stop #4 – Silverstone Infant School

(New Year, New School, Same Mission)

2023 began with new opportunities for the Read Write Now mission. With the support of a one-time equipment grant from the CHASE Fund and the recommendation of Ms. Smith from Cumberland Basic School, our journey took us to Silverstone Infant School in Portmore—our first public school.

Silverstone Infant welcomed us with over 80 students across four vibrant classes, making this one of our largest sessions yet. With the help of passionate volunteers, the mission came alive:
• Kadyah Thomas became a DJ to teach the children about responsibility.
• Ajowah Davidson explained imagination and introduced them to Mr. Green Green.
• Shanique Singh – Miss Jamaica World 2022, travelled across the world with the story Video Call.
• Shade Barrett used her dance moves to show confidence.
• Suana Callum – Miss Supreme Caribbean 2023, highlighted the importance of fruits and vegetables.

• Career Day fell on Valentine’s Day, bringing double the excitement with Khdrea Jones – Miss St. Catherine Festival Queen 2022 and Suelan Fung sharing their careers.

• Author Day featured Danielle Dowie, who read her story and then donated two books to the school library, handing them over to the school’s literacy expert, affectionately known as Auntie Gabby.
• On the final day, Chavelle Kavanaugh – Miss Intercontinental Jamaica 2022 closed the programme with My Own Story, bringing everything full circle.

Silverstone was a shining example of what can happen when creativity, teamwork, and learning meet. The classes were engaging and inclusive—students with challenges were encouraged to let their talents outshine their obstacles. The school itself was beautiful, supported by a strong PTA, and each classroom was equipped with smart TVs, showing the community’s commitment to learning.

All in all, Silverstone Infant School was an amazing experience. The staff, students, and volunteers together created an environment of joy, growth, and inspiration. This stop reminded us that even as the mission grows, the heart remains the same: to inspire Jamaica’s children through reading, writing, and creativity.
