Bridgeport Basic

June 2023

Bridgeport Basic School, Portmore - June 2023

Mission Stop #7 – Bridgeport Basic School

(Small Class, Big Impact)

Our seventh stop brought us to Bridgeport Basic School in Portmore. With only eight Class 3 students, this was one of the smallest groups we had worked with—but it proved that size doesn’t limit impact.

It was June 2023, and though the month was filled with rain, not even the weather could wash away the magic of Read Write Now. In fact, the intimacy of the small class allowed us to focus even more deeply on each child, giving them space to shine.

The volunteers who brought the sessions to life were:
• Suana Callum – Miss Supreme Caribbean 2023, who spoke about responsibility.
• Suelan Fung, who on a rainy day shared her imagination and introduced Mr. Green Green.
• Titania Mycko, who once again ruled the runway with the students, teaching confidence.
• Rickie-Ann Witter, who led a communication masterclass with the help of puppets Mr. Green Green and Tiga.
• Roshea Masters, who inspired the students by sharing her career as a journalist and her work with Television Jamaica.
• Alisha Thorpee, who encouraged healthy eating by talking about fruits and vegetables.

• Celine Walters, who capped off the sessions by helping the children write their own story.

Bridgeport was small in number, but big in energy, joy, and learning. It was also my first time working with a shadow, and meeting the twin sisters Amalia and Amelia in the class made the visit truly unforgettable.

Special thanks once again to Help Jamaica for funding this cycle and ensuring that even the smallest schools can experience the power of literacy, creativity, and imagination.
