Danijah Taylor’s Passion Statement

“Justice for one and all, no matter their economic background, are words I truly believe should transcend all levels of mankind. So when Jamaica for Justice announced its “Artism for Change” project, my passion for climate justice was immediately ignited. As a creative writer, nature has always been one of my places of inspiration. In July 2022, the Rio Cobre River suffered yet another major chemical spill and fish kill. Weeks later, it was confirmed to have been caused by the bauxite mining company Windalco. With spills happening more frequently over the last few years, impacting thousands of impoverished Jamaicans who use the river for their survival, I thought there could be no better topic to use the power of my pen to bring awareness for the need to better manage our natural water resources while highlighting the critical state of the outdated bauxite mining industry in Jamaica and the threat it poses to our environment.”

VIRTUAL PENPOWERMENT

Virtual Penpowerment

This was a virtual collaboration project with Liberty City Reads from Miami, Florida, during the summer of 2020, at the height of COVID-19. The project lasted for four weeks, as we took students through the writing process. Students from both the USA and Canada participated and were able to read their stories at the Liberty City Reads Festival.

READ WRITE NOW + Shash

Read Write Now with Shash

The first phase of Read Write Now took place in 2018. The project lasted for 4 weeks with 1-day follow-up visits every other month. It was held at the National Baptist Basic School in Trench Town and was created and facilitated by Danijah Taylor. The project was financed and received volunteer support from Shashamane Sunrise.

WRITING 4 LIFE

Writing 4 Life

This was a three-year literacy project collaboration with Life Yard from 2017 to 2020, featuring several live readings, three main writing projects, and training sessions. The aim of the project was to expose children to the power of the pen by taking them through the writing process. The project took place in Parade Gardens, Kingston, and with the help of Life Yard members and over 100 volunteers, we delivered the project. It impacted over 200 youths between the ages of 5 and 16 positively.

The project peaked in 2019 with major support coming from groups like The Every Mikkle Foundation, Campion College, and Shashamane Sunrise. The success of Writing 4 Life in Jamaica led Every Mikkle to introduce the project to Ghana on their trip in 2019.
